Rutherford B. Hayes was the 19th President of the United States, serving from 1877 to 1881. He was a Republican Party member and a former Governor of Ohio before becoming President. He is known for his efforts to reconcile the divisions caused by the Civil War and for his commitment to civil service reform. He also oversaw the end of Reconstruction and the withdrawal of federal troops from the South. During his presidency, he also signed the bill that created the United States Geological Survey. He passed away in 1893, but his legacy continues to be recognized today.
