Nicolaus Copernicus was a Renaissance-era mathematician and astronomer who proposed that the Sun, not the Earth, was the center of the solar system. He developed his theory in the early 16th century but only published it, in the form of his book "De revolutionibus orbium coelestium", on the year of his death in 1543. Copernicus's theory was a major shift in the understanding of the universe and laid the foundation for future astronomical discoveries.
