Alan Turing was a British mathematician, logician, and computer scientist, who made significant contributions to the fields of mathematics, logic, and computer science during the first half of the 20th century. He is widely considered as the father of theoretical computer science and artificial intelligence. He was instrumental in cracking Nazi codes during WWII, which helped to shorten the war. After the war, he was persecuted for his homosexuality and was forced to undergo chemical castration. In 1952 he was convicted of homosexuality, then a crime in the UK and was given the option of imprisonment or probation conditional on chemical castration. He committed suicide in 1954. In 2009, Gordon Brown, then Prime Minister, issued a public apology on behalf of the British government for the way he was treated.
