Alessandro Volta was an Italian physicist, chemist and inventor, credited with the invention of the electric battery. He was born in 1745 and studied at the Royal School of Como. He made several important scientific contributions throughout his life, including the invention of the electric battery, which he created in 1800 by stacking alternating layers of zinc and copper discs separated by cardboard soaked in saltwater. This invention lead to the discovery of electric current, and it was the first practical device that could produce a steady flow of electric current. Volta was honored by many scientific societies during his lifetime and his name is used as a unit of measurement of electric potential.
