Archibald Henderson was a American lawyer, author and the longest-serving commandant of the United States Marine Corps. He served as Commandant of the Marine Corps from 1820 to 1859. He was born in 1783 in North Carolina and was appointed as a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps in 1800. He served in various capacities throughout his career, including as a military attaché to the U.S. legation in Paris, and as a member of the Board of Navy Commissioners. He was known for his efforts to modernize and improve the Marine Corps, and for his advocacy for the use of Marines in a variety of roles beyond shipboard duties.
