Robert E. Lee was a career military officer and one of the most celebrated Confederate generals during the American Civil War. He commanded the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia during the war and is best known for his tactics, leadership and strategic thinking. Despite the Confederacy's defeat, Lee's reputation as a gentleman and a skilled military leader remained untarnished. After the war, Lee accepted the presidency of Washington College (later Washington and Lee University) in Lexington, Virginia, where he served until his death in 1870. Today, he is remembered as one of the most prominent figures of the Civil War and his legacy continues to be controversial and debated.
