Alexander Fleming was a Scottish scientist and physician, best known for his discovery of penicillin, the first antibiotic. He was working as a professor of bacteriology at St. Mary's Hospital in London when he discovered that a mold called Penicillium notatum could kill bacteria. He published his findings in 1928, but it wasn't until the 1940s that penicillin was mass-produced and widely used during WWII. Fleming was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1945 for his discovery, which had a profound impact on medicine and saved countless lives. He continued to conduct research and was also a member of several scientific societies.
