Eli Whitney was an American inventor, mechanical engineer, and manufacturer, who is best known for inventing the cotton gin. He was born in Westborough, Massachusetts in 1765 and received a basic education before attending Yale College. After graduation, he taught school and worked as a surveyor for a few years before moving to Georgia in 1792 to manage a plantation. It was there that he came up with the idea for a machine that could separate cotton fibers from seeds. He patented the cotton gin in 1794 and soon began mass-producing the machine, revolutionizing the cotton industry.
