John Basilone was a United States Marine Gunnery Sergeant who served during World War II. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Battle of Guadalcanal. Basilone was also the first enlisted Marine in World War II to receive the Navy Cross. After his heroic actions on Guadalcanal, he was sent back to the United States to sell war bonds. He later returned to combat on Iwo Jima, where he was killed in action.
