Napoleon Bonaparte was a French military leader and emperor who rose to prominence during the French Revolution and its associated wars. He became Emperor of the French from 1804 until 1814 and again briefly in 1815 during the Hundred Days. He is considered one of the greatest commanders in history, and his wars and campaigns are studied at military schools worldwide. His legal and administrative reforms, collectively known as the Napoleonic Code, have a lasting impact on the legal systems of many countries. He was exiled to the island of Elba but escaped and regained power for a short time before being defeated at the Battle of Waterloo. He died in exile in 1821.
