Montesquieu was a French lawyer, man of letters, and political philosopher of the Age of Enlightenment. He is famous for his articulation of the theory of separation of powers, which is implemented in many constitutions throughout the world. He is also known for his work "The Spirit of the Laws" in which he expounded the idea of the separation of powers. He also wrote "Persian Letters" which was a satirical work that criticized the French society of his time. Montesquieu's ideas and writings influenced the American Revolution and the drafting of the U.S. Constitution. He passed away in 1755.
