René Descartes was a French philosopher, mathematician and scientist who is widely considered the father of modern western philosophy and the founder of analytic geometry. He is known for his famous statement "Cogito, ergo sum" (I think, therefore I am) and his work laid the foundation for the scientific method, which is still widely used today. Descartes also made significant contributions to the field of mathematics, including the development of Cartesian coordinates which are used in analytic geometry. He was a key figure in the Scientific Revolution of the 17th century and his ideas continue to influence philosophy and science to this day.
