James Buchanan was the 15th President of the United States, serving from 1857 to 1861. He was the only President from the state of Pennsylvania, and the only President to remain a lifelong bachelor. Buchanan was a member of the Democratic Party, and prior to his Presidency, he served as a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives, a U.S. Senator, and U.S. Secretary of State under President James K. Polk. Buchanan is often considered one of the worst U.S. Presidents, as his presidency was marked by a severe economic depression and the lead up to the American Civil War.
