He also escalated American involvement in the Vietnam War, which deeply divided the country. Despite his accomplishments, he is also remembered for the escalation of the war and his decision not to run for re-election in 1968. He was a skilled politician and a powerful speaker, and his legacy continues to shape American politics today.
