Clara Barton was a pioneering nurse and humanitarian. She is best known for founding the American Red Cross in 1881, an organization that provides emergency assistance, disaster relief, and education inside the United States. Barton served as the organization's president from 1881-1904. Prior to this, she worked as a nurse during the Civil War and tended to the wounded on battlefields. After the war, she spent years searching for missing soldiers and reuniting families. Barton died in 1912.
