Herman Melville was an American novelist, short story writer, and poet, best known for his novel "Moby-Dick." He was born in 1819 and grew up in New York City. After working as a sailor, he began writing and published his first book, "Typee," in 1846. He wrote several more novels, including "Omoo" and "White-Jacket," but it was "Moby-Dick" that cemented his place in literary history. Despite its initial lack of commercial success, the book is now considered a classic of American literature. Melville died in 1891, relatively unknown and unrecognized for his contributions to literature.
