James Monroe was the fifth President of the United States, serving from 1817-1825. He is best known for the Monroe Doctrine, a foreign policy statement that warned European nations against further colonization of the Americas. He also played a key role in the acquisition of Florida from Spain and the drafting of the Constitution. Monroe was a veteran of the Revolutionary War and served as a diplomat and governor before becoming president. He died on July 4, 1831, the third president to die on Independence Day.
