Martin Van Buren was the 8th President of the United States, serving from 1837 to 1841. He was the first President to be born a citizen of the United States, and the first not of British descent. Prior to his presidency, Van Buren served as the Governor of New York, a U.S. Senator, and the 8th Vice President under Andrew Jackson. He was also a key architect of the Democratic Party and an advocate for states' rights. Van Buren's presidency was marked by the economic panic of 1837 and he was not re-elected. Despite his one term, he played an important role in American politics and is considered one of the founders of the Democratic Party.
