Matthew B. Ridgway was a United States Army general who served as the commander of the United Nations Command in the Korean War from 1951 to 1952. He took over command during the war when the UN forces were on the brink of defeat and turned the tide of the war by implementing new tactics, including the use of amphibious assaults. He was known for his leadership skills, and his ability to adapt to changing conditions on the battlefield. After the war, he served as the Supreme Allied Commander in Europe, and later as the Army Chief of Staff. He retired from the army in 1955 and passed away in 1993.
