He is known for signing the Compromise of 1850, which helped to ease tensions between the North and South over the issue of slavery. Fillmore also supported the creation of the University of Buffalo, which is now known as the State University of New York at Buffalo. He ran for president again in 1856 as a member of the American Party, but was not elected. After his presidency, he returned to private life and died in 1874.
