Nelson Mandela was a South African anti-apartheid revolutionary, political leader, and philanthropist who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He was the country's first black head of state and the first elected in a fully representative democratic election. Mandela was a prominent leader of the African National Congress (ANC) and was imprisoned for 27 years for his role in the struggle against apartheid. After his release, he led the negotiations that led to the end of apartheid and the establishment of multi-racial elections in 1994. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993. He passed away in 2013.
