Smedley Darlington Butler was a Major General in the United States Marine Corps and a recipient of the Medal of Honor. He served in various conflicts, including the Spanish-American War, the Boxer Rebellion, and World War I. He was also a vocal critic of U.S. military interventions and an advocate for veterans' rights. He wrote a book, "War Is a Racket" where he criticized and exposed the financial interests behind American military operations. In the 1930s, he was also involved in the Bonus Army movement, which campaigned for veterans' benefits. He retired from the Marine Corps in 1931 and died in 1940.
